Stop-Lossed Soldier Refuses To Redeploy To Iraq
IVAW:
Sgt. Matthis Chiroux, who served in the Army until being honorably discharged last summer after over four years of service in Afghanistan, Japan, Europe and the Phillipines, today publicly announced his intention to refuse orders to deploy to Iraq.

Sgt. Chiroux made made his announcement in the Cannon House Office Building Rotunda after members of Iraq Veterans Against the War testified before the Congressional Progressive Caucus during Winter Soldier on the Hilll. Sgt. Chiroux made the following statement to the press:
Good afternoon. My name is Sgt. Matthis Chiroux, and I served in the Army as a Photojournalist until being honorably discharged last summer after over four years of service in Afghanistan, Japan, Europe and the Philippines. As an Army journalist whose job it was to collect and filter servicemember’s stories, I heard many stomach-churning testimonies of the horrors and crimes taking place in Iraq. For fear of retaliation from the military, I failed to report these crimes, but never again will I allow fear to silence me. Never again will I fail to stand.
Sgt. Chiroux believes the occupation of Iraq is illegal and unconstitutional, you can see his video message here. IAWA has set up a legal defense fund for Matthis, but the link isn’t working at the moment. Please keep checking back to their site if you would like to donate.

Hello Kitler
Bush Makes Nazi Swipe At Obama
President George W. Bush used his speech to the Israeli Knesset this morning to inject himself into the 2008 presidential race with a swipe at Barack Obama's call for diplomatic engagement with Iran.

First, he equated Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with Hamas, Hezbollah and Osama bin Laden. Then: "Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: 'Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.' We have an obligation to call this what it is -- the false comfort of appeasement."
Obama Responds
"It is sad that President Bush would use a speech to the Knesset on the 60th anniversary of Israel's independence to launch a false political attack," Obama said in a statement. "George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists and the president's extraordinary politicization of foreign policy and the politics of fear do nothing to secure the American people or our stalwart ally Israel."
Biden Calls "Bullshit" - Literally.
“This is bullshit. This is malarkey. This is outrageous. Outrageous for the president of the United States to go to a foreign country, sit in the Knesset…and make this kind of ridiculous statement,” Biden said angrily in a brief interview just off the Senate floor.

“He’s the guy who’s weakened us. He’s the guy that’s increased the number of terrorists in the world. His policies have produced this vulnerability the United States has. His intelligence community pointed that out not me. The NIE has pointed that out and what are you talking about, is he going to fire Condi Rice? Condi Rice has talked about the need to sit down. So his first two appeasers are Rice and Gates. I hope he comes home and does something.”

He quoted Gates saying Wednesday that we “need to figure out a way to develop some leverage and then sit down and talk with them.”

My dear friend [info]lolasenvy is trying to finance a trip to the UK to see and meet her current idol/obsession David Tennant, who plays Doctor Who (also from the Friday Night Project - awesome show, that - and from playing Bartie Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter & The Prisoner Of Azkhaban. She's a bit of a Shakespeareophile and Hamlet is her favorite work by the Bard, and she will be seeing David Tennant as Hamlet in Stratford On Avon, Shakespeare's home town. PArt of what she's doing to raise funds is to offer downloads from her Megaupload account, as she gets a kickback from each download that comes from a different IP address. Today's offerings are all related to the phenomenal and influential band that hailed from Macclesfield in the late 70's, my beloved Joy Division. Please visit her blog daily and download at least one thing each day, please - it would mean a lot to us both. For my part, I'll be adding things to her account and linking to her posts as well in my daily download posts. There will be music, images, software programs, Photoshop tools, torrent files, and whatever you guys would like me to upload for you. Watch both of our blogs daily and make sure to snag at least one thing each time, even if it's the same small picture each time - delete the file once you've downloaded it, whatever you want, as long as you can help out that's all I'm asking for.

While you're at it, friend her. She's one of the closest people in the world to me, see each other often enough to be codependent, and I don't think would do too well without one another.

Clinton: It'd be 'terrible mistake' to pick McCain over Obama
Hillary Clinton on Wednesday reiterated her vow to stay in the Democratic presidential race, but she said it would be a "terrible mistake" for her supporters to vote for John McCain over Barack Obama.

"Anybody who has ever voted for me or voted for Barack has much more in common in terms of what we want to see happen in our country and in the world with the other than they do with John McCain," Clinton said on CNN's "The Situation Room."

"I'm going to work my heart out for whoever our nominee is. Obviously, I'm still hoping to be that nominee, but I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that anyone who supported me ... understands what a grave error it would be not to vote for Sen. Obama."

Clinton was responding to a question from a CNN iReporter who asked why she thought so many of her supporters would choose McCain over Obama.

Tonight is my sister's anniversary party at a place in downtown next to Damien's office. I love her dearly, she's never once been judgmental or even critical of me, not once. Whenever I see her, it's always just a happy thing. I threw my back out yesterday and am in a great deal of pain, but I'm determined to be there - my last Vicodin willing.

I'm reasonably sure that my oldest brother and my father will be there as well, considering this is a family gathering. It will be the first time I've seen or heard from either of them since the big blow-up happened where my father said he was ashamed to be my father and my brother defended him - all over some stupid bullshit. It will also be the first time I've seen my other siblings who were the audience for the big blow-up on me, who saw and heard and said nothing. I'm not sure about you, but when I see an injustice happen and there are witnesses who say nothing, that speaks volumes about them and their character. By saying nothing, you say EVERYTHING. I will not be complacent.

Damien and I are going for my sister's benefit and to show love for her and her husband on their special day. I will take care to avoid people I no longer wish to engage or hold in reverence, and should they attempt conversation with me I'll be quick to give the first single word answer available and then I'm moving away from them. This night is not about me or them, and if they want to try and speak to me then they have options they can take upon themselves to contact me. No scenes, no lame attempts at saving face, I'm not having that. If you cannot do it on your own time because it means something to you, then it's an insult and I'm not going to accept that simply because it is too easy.

I'm done with making a banquet out of crumbs - I deserve better than that and I expect nothing less than what I deserve. I'm done with anyone trying to make me burn for something when it's not my bonfire to be thrown upon. I'm done with being treated unfairly by anyone who expects something of me, I don't owe them loyalty I'm not given. I'm done with anyone who wants a place in my life without earning it, because I'm tired of dispensing my love and energy on people who aren't truly invested in me.

Most of all, I have no time, patience, or use for anyone that refuses to look the love of my life in the eye when he's always by my side and not only appreciate what he's brought to my world, but show him the respect he's earned for having the testicular fortitude to do the work it took when they haven't.

It's a standard for a reason, you don't compromise your principles just because it would be a lot easier than digging in your heels. I'm just glad I have the constitution to draw the lines and say what's what to everyone equally.

100,000 may have died in cyclone
The situation in cyclone-devastated Myanmar is becoming "more and more horrendous" and the death toll in the nation's delta region alone could top 100,000, said Shari Villarosa, the top U.S. diplomat in Myanmar.
I don't even have words for how this makes me feel, I don't believe there are any.
